It’s been a minute since I’ve formally reviewed a concert. Much like an artist making music, there are periods of time where you need a break. That chance to go experience something new that can then bring a new shade of color. For me, it was finishing college, traveling & starting a career. But then came the time where I missed the excitement of reviewing and photographing versus just being a face in the crowd. There’s something about the magic of those first few minutes when lights go down & the rush when they come back up and there are only 3 songs to get that perfect capture of emotion.
As fall finally showed up in DC, so to did The Goo Goo Dolls bringing their Dizzy Up The Girl 20th Anniversary Tour to The Anthem. Unlike a typical show, there was no opening act and instead we got treated to roughly 24 songs spanning the aforementioned album being played front to back + a series of greatest hits. Broken into two halves with an encore at the end, it was a testament to the strength of music produced by the Grammy award winning band.
Admittedly, I don’t remember the initial release of the album, but a live version of Iris has been a consistent track on playlists over the years. Whether a fan in the past five years or for the last twenty, the concert brought out emotions from each and every person in the room.
The band will continue their tour throughout the east coast and traverse back west in the coming weeks. To see a full list of dates, visit their website.
