Packing for a trip can be one of the most daunting tasks.. Trust me I have had to do it at least 5 times this summer alone. With just a few days until I head back abroad for a month, packing is on the brain.. especially since I’ve been packing up my apartment at the same time so that I can move to a new one the day I get back stateside (I’m crazy.. I know). With that said, here is a quick list of the essentials (for me at least) when it comes to packing for a trip.
What I have found is that layers is the way to go. Especially in the winter.. you will probably be photographed in the same jacket a thousand times so just bring a few simple shirts for underneath. On the same note, don’t worry about bringing every funky outfit you have and instead focus on the basics. Simple pieces that can be mixed and matched to create varied looks are incredibly useful and save on space. I love scarves in the fall and winter and they are a simple and space saving way to change up your look without much effort. Always make sure to have extra socks and underwear.. seems like a no brainer but I can’t count the times where I miscounted and didn’t bring enough. If you are going international, make sure to have the correct travel adapters.
I always throw a small daytime bag into my larger purse so that when I arrive, I can downsize to something small without many external pockets (less access for pickpockets). Also keep a small book or journal in your suitcase for those times when you need something to read or want to write about the memories. A book in your purse can provide simple entertainment when waiting in lines (alone) and saves your phone battery.
Make sure to leave room in your suitcase because chances are, you will pick up a thing or two while traveling. Also keep a few spare plastic bags to throw things in for security and a larger bag to put dirty laundry in. Lastly, make sure you have travel safe bottles to save yourself from things exploding inside a suitcase.
