She made a splash with her single “My Oh My,” but Tristan Prettyman’s Cedar + Gold easily goes down as one of my favorite albums of 2012. For some reason, I have trouble finding female singers I like; so when I come across one like Tristan whose album I can listen to on repeat, I get a bit excited. This isn’t Tristan’s first time with music, but after a four year hiatus, she has come back strong and started fresh in certain aspects of life. During the hiatus, she had vocal cord surgery, ended an engagement, traveled all over the world, and struggled with whether she really wanted to continue to pursue music. I can safely say that I’m glad she decided to come back.
The album is filled with songs of love and loss and is the perfect music to listen to while cuddled up in a warm blanket by the fire with that cup of peppermint hot chocolate. Her emotion reaches through the tracks, helping to deliver her message almost like she is telling you stories of what happened. Though the music is so personal, it is also relatable. Everyone goes through moments like Tristan’s. Maybe not always on the same level, but emotions are part of life and the way she can draw on hers yet also draw you in is something that I find so amazing. From the slow songs to the fast, I think the album is best listened to in order. The tracklisting is as follows:
Say Anything
I Was Gonna Marry You
My Oh My
Unconditionally
Quit You
Bad Drug
Come Clean
Glass Jar
When You Come Down
Deepest Ocean
Blue
Second Chance
Never Say Never
The Rebound (bonus track)
