A few months back, I was browsing music on YouTube and came across the Canadian band Hedley. I had tried to get an interview with them then, but emails got lost along the way so nothing ever materialized. Last week, I was excited to see an email asking if I wanted to chat with the band. Now that they are in the US to promote their single, it is the perfect time to bring their music to you. In chatting with guitarist Dave Rosin, I not only learned a lot about the band, but also how enthusiastic the members are about bring their music to different people.
Having been together for eight years, Dave said that when his old band was singer-less, “it [was] almost – I don’t wanna say love at first sight because that doesn’t sound right – but kind of like when you meet your girlfriend or your boyfriend for the first time, I kind of had that feeling because I saw Jake and I was like man, I’d really like to play in a band with that guy.”
The band is also big into constantly developing their sound.
“We never want to stay doing the same thing and maybe sometimes what has helped build our fans is our ADD.” Dave added while talking about the constant progression of their sound.
The band may look like they should play punk rock music, but take a listen to any song and you will find elements of many genres blended into a more pop rock feel. It’s evident that their varying styles add to the overall uniqueness of the band.
“We all like different styles, like Jake is big into alt-country and our big hip-hop head as well. Chris, our drummer, is big into motown and old 70s stuff. Tom is everything from old country to a rock and metal band, and I kind of span the genre of 90s and 80s; and somewhere we all share this crazy love for music.”
Not only do they love music, but they also love their fans. Through impromptu twitcams and random twitter sessions, the band is constantly chatting with the people who put them where they are.
From car-crashes to jumping off buildings, the band pushes the limits with their videos and try to give their fans something new. “We always try and do something different,” Dave mentioned when we chatted about the new music video for their song “Kiss You Inside Out.”
After chatting for a little while, I brought up one of my favorite questions, how they get involved with charities. The band works with Free The Children, an organization that empowers young people to help make a change and help other young people. From their efforts to help the world to great music and the perfect relationship with their fans, Hedley is a band to check out.
