Shaheed “Heed” Smith of Big Heed & Alien spoke with me about the band. In his natural funny character we had a great conversation and even talked about his involvement with charaties!
Q: You’ve worked with some cool people, so who has been the most fun to work with?
A: Hmm… Cee Lo, because he’s funny; he jokes a lot like me. He doesn’t know when to stop, but yes he does know when to stop because he makes good records. But I sit there and watch Cee Lo play around in the studio all day and then make a hit by the end of the night. I guess it’s all in timing, embracing your crazy side, having fun with it, and broadcasting it to the world. So, Cee Lo would probably definitely be the most fun person I’ve worked with in my career.
Q: What is going on right now with that band?
A: We’re about to start this little tour with The Billionaires, and I think that starts within the next couple of weeks. We got a couple of shows that we’re doing down here in town. So you know, we’re just recording. We have a mixed tape that we’re excited about. We’ve been working on the album and stuff, so we’ve been doing a lot of recording and doing shows – just trying to stay busy, trying not to be idle-minded. You know, if mama tell you to get off the couch, get off the couch!
Q: Do you guys have any charities that you support?
A: Yes. I have a foundation that I’m involved with. My aunt has ALS, and it’s a disease that disfigures all the movement in the body: your muscles are breaking down and stuff. So, she’s basically in her hospital bed on life support, and that’s the small charity that we have going now. We’re trying to raise money to support research for ALS. I’m all about charity; I’m all about helping the unfortunate- even the homeless. I have a thing for homeless people because I’ve been there, so I know what it’s like. I guess once everybody steps out of their shell, I think a lot more people will go towards donating towards charity and stuff like that.
Q: ‘Tipsy’ was the first big song that got your name out there, mainstream wise on the radio. So what can people expect to hear in the next hit?
A: Well, we’re working on that now. The thing with that radio is that the hits for the radio are usually just for the radio, so they’re supposed to be fun because if we don’t do something fun it’ll probably be crazy. So we’ll do something fun for the radio in our next hit to balance out the insaneness and the randomness. So, yeah, I can’t tell you what it is right now, but we’re working on new songs.
Q: Social networking wise, do you guys have a twitter and a Facebook to chat with fans?
A: Yes, if you go to twitter.com/bigheedandalien.com, I know it’s kind of long. We’re going to try and chop it down to twitter.com/bhaa if we can. You can also hit us up on Facebook and YouTube – you can hit us up on anything basically. Yeah, we definitely answer back and respond to all our fans, at least we try to. We aren’t like the big celebrities, too busy to re-tweet back. We try to get back at everybody.
Q: If you guys could put one of your songs onto a TV show, what would it be?
A: Alien would probably say Tosh.O; I watch TV, but I can’t sit in front of a TV for too long, but I would say it would have to be something on Cartoon Network. It would probably have to be Seth Green’s show, World Wide Chicken. That show is amazing, and I tell you- they need a little bit more props than what they are getting. I’d love to work with him… but yeah, that show is amazing.
